Rongai Route – 7 Days Trekking

Safari Overview

The Rongai Route is one of the less crowded routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It typically takes six to seven days to complete the climb, with seven days being the more common choice for those seeking a slower pace for acclimatization and enjoyment of the scenery. Here’s a basic outline of the seven-day Rongai Route:

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1

Starting at the Nale Moru Gate, you'll hike through farmland and forests to the Simba Camp at an elevation of around 2,600 meters.

Day 2

The trek continues through moorland, with increasingly sparse vegetation. You'll reach Second Cave Camp, situated around 3,450 meters.

Day 3

Ascend through moorland and alpine desert to reach the Kikelewa Cave Camp at approximately 3,600 meters.

Day 4

Continue ascending through the alpine desert, passing Mawenzi Tarn Camp en route to the Third Cave Camp at around 3,800 meters.

Day 5

Trek across the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, reaching School Hut Camp at approximately 4,800 meters.

Day 6

The summit attempt begins around midnight, trekking up to Gilman's Point (5,681 meters) on the crater rim, then onward to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters). Descend to Horombo Hut Camp at approximately 3,700 meters for overnight.

Day 7

Descend through moorland and forest to Marangu Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificates and transfer back to your hotel.

This itinerary allows for proper acclimatization, increasing your chances of successfully reaching the summit while minimizing the risk of altitude sickness. However, it’s essential to remember that altitude affects everyone differently, and it’s crucial to listen to your body and the advice of your guides throughout the climb.
