Trekking Mount Meru
Mount Meru is a popular trekking destination located in Tanzania, near the city of Arusha and within the Arusha National Park. Embakai Tours and Safaris, like many other tour operators in the region, typically offer guided trekking packages to Mount Meru. While specific routes may vary slightly depending on the tour operator and the preferences of the trekkers, there are generally two main routes used to climb Mount Meru: the Momella Route and the Saddle Route.
Momella Route:
- This is the most common route for climbing Mount Meru and is often considered the easiest and most scenic.
- The trek usually starts from the Momella Gate, located on the eastern side of the mountain, within the Arusha National Park.
- The route passes through lush montane forests, open grasslands, and moorlands, offering diverse landscapes and wildlife viewing opportunities.
- Trekkers typically spend the first night at Miriakamba Hut, the second night at Saddle Hut, and the summit attempt is made from Saddle Hut in the early morning.
- The ascent to the summit usually involves passing through Rhino Point before reaching the true summit of Socialist Peak (4,562 meters / 14,967 feet).
- The descent is often made via the same route, back to Momella Gate.
Saddle Route:
- The Saddle Route is less frequented than the Momella Route and is often chosen by trekkers seeking a more challenging and less crowded experience.
- This route starts from the western side of the mountain, also within the Arusha National Park.
- Trekkers typically start at the same Momella Gate but branch off towards the Saddle Hut early on in the trek.
- The Saddle Route passes through similar vegetation zones as the Momella Route but offers different perspectives of the mountain and surrounding landscape.
- The summit attempt is made from Saddle Hut, following the same path as the Momella Route.
- Trekkers usually descend via the Momella Route or, occasionally, via the Mweka Route, which is used for Kilimanjaro descents.
Embakai Tours and Safaris would likely offer guided packages for both routes, including transportation, park fees, camping equipment, meals, and experienced guides and porters. It’s essential to inquire directly with the tour operator for specific details, pricing, and availability of trekking packages to Mount Meru. Additionally, ensure that you’re adequately prepared for high-altitude trekking and have the necessary gear and fitness level for the climb.
