5-Day Climbing Kilimanjaro via Marangu Route

Mid-range

Price of 1330USD/ person

Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu route is the oldest and most established trekking route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is often considered the easiest path due to its gradual slope. The Marangu route is also the only route that offers dormitory-style sleeping huts. For these reasons, it remains the most popular option, especially for climbers seeking a more traditional experience with basic comforts.

Day 2 Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

The day begins with an early breakfast before you depart Mandara Hut and continue the ascent. You gradually leave the forest behind and reach the timberline, where the landscape opens into heath and moorland. Vegetation becomes sparser, with shrubs and hardy plants adapted to higher altitudes.

The hike to Horombo Hut takes about 4 to 6 hours and ends at an altitude of 3,700m/12,140ft. Along the way, you enjoy wide views, and as you approach the hut, Mawenzi and Kibo come into view, with the Masai steppe stretching out below.

Day 3 Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Today’s stage of the climb is long and demanding. The trail begins with a steady ascent along a well-defined path, passing the last water point, the final reliable water source before the summit. From here, the route continues across the Saddle, a wide, barren plateau that lies between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi.

The day’s destination is Kibo Hut, located at around 4,700m/15,420ft. The hike takes approximately 5 to 6 hours and covers 9,5km/5,9mi. Although the climb is challenging, it brings you significantly closer to the summit.

On arrival at Kibo Hut, you are served an early dinner before turning in for the night to rest ahead of the summit attempt.

Day 4 Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then to Horombo Hut

Today is summit day! Around midnight, you begin the long, demanding final ascent. Along the way, you pass Hans Meyer Cave at 5,220m/17,130ft as the trail continues steadily upward.

At sunrise, you reach Gillman’s Point (5,681m/18,640ft) on the crater rim. As the sun rises, temperatures begin to warm slightly, offering relief from the night’s cold. From here, it is another 1 to 2 hours of hiking to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,340ft), the highest point on Mt Kilimanjaro.

After time at the summit to take photos and enjoy the views, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a warm meal and a short rest of about 1 to 2 hours. You then continue the descent to Horombo Hut, bringing a long and challenging day to an end.

Day 5 Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

The final stage of the trek descends through the heath and moorland zone toward Mandara Hut (2,700m/8,860ft), where a warm lunch is served. After a short rest, you continue the descent through the lush rainforest encountered earlier in the climb.

After about 6 hours of trekking, you reach Marangu Gate (1,860m/6,100ft), marking the end of your Kilimanjaro climb. Here, you say goodbye to your mountain guides and crew. A short transfer then takes you back to your hotel in Moshi, where a hot shower and some well-earned rest await.

With the summit behind you, this is a moment to reflect on the achievement and the journey across Mt Kilimanjaro’s changing landscapes.
