Serengeti National Park is a year-round safari destination, with each season offering unique wildlife experiences. The best time to visit depends on what you want to see. January – March (Calving Season) This is one of the best times to visit the southern Serengeti, where over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born. The abundance of newborn animals attracts predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas, creating exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities. The weather is generally warm with lush green landscapes. Best for: Calving season, predator sightings, photography, birdwatching. April – May (Green Season) These are the long rainy months, transforming the Serengeti into a vibrant green paradise. Visitor numbers are lower, making it ideal for travellers seeking quieter safaris and attractive lodge rates. Wildlife remains plentiful, although some roads may become muddy. Best for: Budget safaris, fewer crowds, scenic landscapes, birdwatching. June – July (Dry Season Begins) As the rains end, wildlife gathers around permanent water sources, making animals easier to spot. During this period, the Great Migration moves through the Western Corridor, where visitors may witness dramatic Grumeti River crossings. Best for: Excellent game viewing, pleasant weather, migration sightings. August – October (Peak Safari Season) This is considered the best time to visit the northern Serengeti, where the famous Mara River crossings take place.
