June to October – Best Time for Wildlife Viewing The dry season from June to October is considered the prime safari season in Katavi National Park. During these months, the floodplains dry out, forcing thousands of animals to gather around the Katuma River and the remaining pools of water. This concentration of wildlife provides outstanding opportunities to observe elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and predators in close proximity. Katavi is especially famous for its dramatic hippo gatherings during the dry season. Hundreds of hippos crowd into shrinking pools, often leading to noisy territorial disputes and fascinating wildlife behaviour. July to September – Peak Safari Season The months of July to September are often regarded as the best time to experience Katavi at its finest. November to February – Green Season and Bird Watching From November to February, the seasonal rains transform Katavi into a lush, green paradise. Rivers begin flowing again, floodplains fill with water, and wildlife spreads throughout the park as food and water become plentiful. Although animals are more dispersed, the scenery becomes exceptionally beautiful and vibrant. This period is ideal for bird watching, as migratory birds arrive and resident birdlife becomes highly active. The green landscapes, dramatic skies, and newborn animals provide excellent opportunities for nature photography. March to May – Long Rainy Season The long rainy season from March to May brings heavy rainfall, making many roads within the park difficult or impossible to access. During this period, several safari camps close temporarily because travel conditions become challenging. Wildlife is widely dispersed across the park, making game viewing less predictable. Despite these challenges, the park remains incredibly scenic, with lush vegetation, flowing rivers, and abundant birdlife.
