June to October – Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking The dry season from June to October is considered the ideal time to visit Mahale Mountains National Park. As food becomes less abundant at higher elevations, chimpanzees often descend closer to the lower forest, making them easier to locate. Trekking conditions are excellent, with dry paths and pleasant weather allowing visitors to spend more time exploring the forest. This period is also perfect for relaxing on the sandy beaches of Lake Tanganyika, enjoying boat trips, kayaking, and swimming in the lake’s remarkably clear waters. The combination of comfortable weather and outstanding wildlife viewing makes June to October the most popular season to visit Mahale. November to February – Green Season and Scenic Beauty From November to February, Mahale enters its green season as short rains refresh the forest. The vegetation becomes lush and vibrant, waterfalls begin flowing, and the landscape transforms into a tropical paradise. Although chimpanzees may move deeper into the forest in search of fruit, experienced guides still provide rewarding trekking experiences. This season is particularly attractive for photographers and bird watchers. Colourful migratory birds arrive, butterflies are abundant, and the rainforest becomes exceptionally beautiful. Visitors also enjoy quieter trails and a peaceful atmosphere, making it an excellent time for travellers seeking solitude and natural beauty. March to May – Long Rainy Season The long rainy season from March to May brings heavier rainfall, making forest trails muddy and trekking more demanding. Chimpanzees often move higher into the mountains, requiring longer hikes to locate them. While the scenery is at its greenest, travel can be more challenging due to wet conditions. Despite the rains, this period offers a truly tranquil wilderness experience with very few visitors. The rainforest is alive with birdlife, colourful flowers, and flowing streams, creating excellent opportunities for landscape and nature photography. Some lodges may reduce operations during this season, so advance planning is recommended.
